Screwdriver Powered Electric Vehicle Steers With Your Body

Electric vehicles are just now starting to make their mark on the general transportation market. While it has a long way to go, a lot of talented engineers and designers are putting their best works forward to help get us to an electric vehicle future. While some of those design efforts are more focused in the world of everyday transportation, some are definitely more esoteric. This is where we find the electric screwdriver powered “EX”, designed and built by Nils Ferber in cooperation with Sebation Auray, Ruben Faber, and Ludolf von Oldershausen.

The “EX” utilizes 2 18-volt screwdrivers ( household rechargeable drill, if you please) to propel the vehicle up to a very functional 30 km/h. The driver mounts the “EX” by lying on the vehicle with outstretched arms and upright head. I suppose the term “rider” would be a better fit here.

The rider controls the momentum of the vehicle with the brake and accelerator hand mounts. Direction is interesting, since it is managed by tilting the back wheel with the rider’s body. A special shine shaped joint arrangement allows this whole body control mechanism to work.

The power train consists of the two electric screwdrivers hooked through a clutch gearwheel that transmits the torque to the rear bicycle style wheel. Once you are mounted on the “EX”, it is a simple matter to hit the accelerator and wiggle your way down the road. The low slung view of the road is no doubt exciting as you quietly zip along your way.

Cordless Power

The term cordless literally means without a cord and is generally used to refer to electrical or electronic devices that are powered by a battery or battery pack and can operate without a power cord or cable attached to a fixed electricity supply such as an outlet, generator, or other centralized power source, allowing greater mobility. The development of more powerful rechargeable batteries in recent years has allowed the production of battery-powered versions of tools and appliances that once required a power cord, and these are distinguished by the term “cordless”, as in cordless drills, cordless saws, and cordless irons.
