Use Siri to Create a Shopping List

Did you know that you can use Siri, everyone’s favorite virtual assistant found on the iPhone 4S, to make a shopping list? Well, you can, and it is a simple process once you know how its done (thanks to TUAW for sharing this tip).

Fire up the Reminders application (which I keep finding new uses for, especially since it syncs so well with everything through iCloud), and create a new list. In case you haven’t explored Reminders yet, you can create a new list by touching the top left button on the application (look for three horizontal lines), then select “Edit” at the top right, and finally “Create New List” at the bottom of any existing lists on the screen. Name it something logical (like “groceries, maybe), and touch “Done”. Now you are ready to have Siri manage you shopping list.

To use, simply tell Siri something like “Add eggs to my Groceries list”. She will ask you for confirmation, and then add it to your list. This makes it easy to add to your grocery list as you discover the items you need. Then, when you get to the store, just check off the items as you get them. It is as simple as that.

Of course, you could use Siri to create all kinds of lists, not just one for groceries. For example, you could create a list for project notes, or even gift ideas. Siri makes it especially convenient, since you might need to make an entry where typing is not readily possible, such as on a walk. Besides, aren’t quiet walks a great place to get the ideas flowing?

Now, this may mean more to people who are compulsive list makers than those of you who are not, but even the most non-organized can find such capability a welcome tool. It’s also a great way to track your food intake for the new year, just create a suitable list and add on before or after each meal. Hey, that reminds me – “Siri, add pizza to my food list”.
