China Creates Low Cost 3D Printed Car

20150328NB_ChinesePrintedCar2

The Chinese company Sanya Sihai has created a new, low cost car using 3D printed technologies, and they have done using “tyrant gold” filaments. This is definitely sure to impress any rulers on your shopping list, and at a price that makes it easier to handle for the average buyer.

The car is all electric and weighs in at a mere 1,102 lbs (500 kg). It measures only 11.9 ft (3.6m) long and  5.5 ft (1.63m) wide, making it it easy to park at those soon to be popular 3D printed road rallies.

It only cost costs $1770 to build the car in its entirety, not bad for a fun little cruiser that rolls out at a break neck 25 mph.

Lose The Board With The ‘Post Modern Skateboard’

20150328NB_PostModernSkateboard

Okay, it’s now 2015 – where are our hover boards? Well, perhaps we didn’t get cinematic promise, but here is something that goes one step farther – a skateboard with no board.

Instead you have two rings that you step into, and an outside edge provides the rolling surface to get you moving. And by moving I hope I don’t mean sudden faceplant, but rather a smooth ride on your flat plane of choice. According to the video below, it’s mostly like skating, but instead of a toe stop you should be able to step out of them in a pinch. I think that’s the theory, anyway.

Be in Two Places at Once Thanks to Your Double

Wouldn’t it be great if you could be in two places at once? You would probably need your own double to make that happen. And that is exactly the thinking behind the Double, a device designed to empower you beyond your physical presence.

The Double is a virtual presence (telepresence) device that could be described as a Segway with an iPad. You control it via tablet (iPad, no doubt), and it allows you to virtually roam halls, carry on conversations, and do everything you might need to do otherwise in person. The device even allows you to adjust your viewing angle and/or height, giving you the chance to have those important face to virtual face conversations.

The beauty is that much of the required communications hardware is found within the iPad, making it easier to produce and get onto the market. In fact, the first run of the $2000 device is sold out, but they are taking orders now for 2013 delivery. Check out the video below for an example of Double in action, and you just might come to the same conclusion I have – I need my own Double.

Segway

The Segway PT is a two-wheeled self-balancing battery-powered electric vehicle invented by Dean Kamen. It is produced by Segway Inc. of New Hampshire, USA. The name Segway is a homophone of the word segue, meaning “smooth transition”; PT denotes “personal transporter”.

The Pet Pedometer

Counting the steps one makes in a day is one way to monitor your activity level. This rough indication is easy to measure using a readily available pedometer.   If I remember correctly, around 10,000 steps in a 24 hour period was considered to be a good healthy number for humans. But, the statement begs, what if you are not human?

Well, if you happen to be of the canine persuasion, then I have good news for you. One, you can read and apparently use the web. And two, the Pet Pedometer, now available from ThinkGeek for around $10, is an easy way to count those doggie steps. You just have to attach it to the collar, and the steps start adding up. Curious as to how many steps you use to chase the cat or run down the mailman? Now you can easily tell the health benefit from these popular activities.

And if you happen to be a dog’s owner, this might be a great way to see if Fido is due a few walks. Now the counter only goes to 99,999, so you probably need to reset it every few days. Also, the factor of the dog’s four legs as compared to the human’s two is probably already calculated into the display, so manually doubling the count is not required. And finally – it won’t work with cats. Cats are just like that, so don’t ask.

Pedometer

A pedometer is a device, usually portable and electronic or electromechanical, that counts each step a person takes by detecting the motion of the person’s hips. Because the distance of each person’s step varies, an informal calibration, performed by the user, is required if presentation of the distance covered in a unit of length (such as in kilometres or miles) is desired.
