The Freestyle Dirtsurfer looks like an all-terrain skate board, and given the name that seems to be the ideal.  The ride looks fun, and with a nice large brake on the back hopefully the rider will get a chance to take things slow while getting used to it.  The suggested price is $450, so taking it easy at first might make financial sense as well.
