Gang of bloodthirsty plants is actually real microphotography
Sunday, 28 September 2008
Written by: Greg Chaffins

At first glimpse the picture above looks like a blatant photoshop job of an attempt to create something reminiscent of Little Shop Of Horrors ("Feed Me Seymour").  However, the picture is real, and it is actually an array of suckers found on the business end of the tentacles on a long-finned squid.

Each one of the suckers is a little smaller than the width of a human hair (400 micrometers) with "fangs" consisting of a hard organic material known as chitin.

Drexel doctoral student Jessica Schiffman won an Honorable photography mention in the 2008 International Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge for the work, and it is quite an eye-opener.
