Greg Chaffins Estes Model Rocket Kits have been around for a very long time, and many budding rocket scientists probably built and flew their rockets. But now Estes is taking things to a new technological level by offering their Scorpio Rocket Kit that incorporates 3D printing in the rocket construction.
Once you buy the kit there are downloadable models for such things as the nose cone, fin can, coupler, engine retainers, and six different fin styles. The kit allows you to quickly explore different rocket build combinations by using a twist lock assembly fin system. This approach lets the user get a little hands on with the different flight characteristics without the need for glue and teardowns. This kit really does emphasize the idea of learn by doing, which is probably the best way to learn and experience the fun.
The completed rocket uses the E16 or F15 engines, and can soar upwards of a thousand feet. Naturally a 3D printer will be required to complete assembly (along with filament!) While fun for one, this kit would also be a great way to share a learning experience with others. And now, 3…2…1… To Infinity and beyond!
