An Ultraviolet Look at a Solar Eclipse

credit NASA/JPL

Here is an interesting and quite fiery picture of our Sun, shot during a solar eclipse. The edge of the Earth is blocking part of the Sun, and the image itself was shot in Ultraviolet (then probably recolored for effect). Obviously this picture could not have been taken from Earth, and in fact it was snapped by NASA's Solar Dynamic Observatory. The image was taken in March 2011.

Eclipse

An eclipse is an astronomical event that occurs when an astronomical object is temporarily obscured, either by passing into the shadow of another body or by having another body pass between it and the viewer. An eclipse is a type of syzygy.
