But what actually is the internet? Where does it live? And how does typing a few words turn into a webpage appearing on your screen?

The Internet Is Not a Place
Despite what it feels like, the internet is not a single thing. It’s not a building. It’s not a server. It’s not “out there somewhere.” The internet is a massive network of networks.
It’s millions of computers, servers, and systems all connected together, constantly communicating. Think of it less like a place… and more like a global conversation.
One that never stops.
Your Request: The Journey Begins
When you type in a website (like NerdBeach.com – shameless self promotion), your device sends out a request. It’s basically saying:
“Hey, I’m looking for this specific information. Anyone know where it is?”
But your device doesn’t magically know where that website lives. So first, it needs directions.
DNS: The Internet’s Address Book
This is where DNS (Domain Name System) comes in. DNS translates human-friendly names (like “google.com”) into IP addresses, which are the numerical identifiers computers actually use.
Because while you prefer “youtube.com,” your computer prefers something like:
172.217.164.110
Memorable? No.
Functional? Yes.
So DNS acts like a translator, turning names into addresses so your request can find the right destination.
Packets: Breaking Everything Into Pieces
Once your device knows where to go, it sends your request across the network. But it doesn’t send it all at once. Just like with Wi-Fi and streaming, the data is broken into small chunks called packets. Each packet travels independently, carrying:
- A piece of the data
- The destination address
- Instructions for reassembly
It’s like sending a message across the world in hundreds of tiny envelopes. And trusting they’ll all arrive.
Routing: Finding the Best Path
Here’s where things get interesting. Your data doesn’t take a single, fixed route. Instead, it moves through a series of routers—devices that decide where each packet should go next. Each router looks at the destination and says:
“Best way forward? This direction.”
So your data hops from point to point, crossing networks, sometimes even continents, until it reaches its destination. And it all happens in milliseconds.

The Server: Where the Website Lives
Eventually, your request reaches a server—the computer that stores the website you’re trying to access. The server processes your request and sends the data back. Again, in packets.
Your device receives these packets, reassembles them, and displays the result as a webpage. And just like that, you’re scrolling.
Cables: Yes, There Are Actual Wires
Despite how “wireless” everything feels, most of the internet runs on physical cables. Including massive undersea cables that connect continents. These cables carry enormous amounts of data across the globe at incredible speeds.
So when you load a website hosted on another continent, your data may literally travel under the ocean to get there. Which is both impressive and slightly humbling.
Speed: Why It Feels Instant
The internet feels instant because data travels incredibly fast – close to the speed of light. Combined with efficient routing, powerful servers, and optimized systems, this creates the illusion that everything happens immediately.
But technically, there’s always a tiny delay. You just don’t notice it. Unless something goes wrong.
Then you notice everything.

Why the Internet Sometimes Fails
For something so advanced, the internet can be… surprisingly fragile. Issues can happen because of:
- Network congestion
- Server overload
- Hardware failures
- Cable damage
- Wi-Fi issues (always Wi-Fi issues)
