Part of the NerdBeach Companion Series “How to Take Back Control of Your Attention”

There you are, doing your own thing. When suddenly, Your phone buzzes. Or dings. Or maybe it lights up like it’s trying to signal aircraft in the middle of dense fog. And without even thinking, you check it. Immediately. It Doesn’t matter what you were doing:
- Working
- Talking to someone
- Finally being productive for once
Your brain just puts your entire life on hold and says:
“Hold on… we need to see what that is.”
So you check. And you know what? it’s… a sale. Or a random app update. Or a notification that another notification exists and you haven’t checked it yet.
And yet somehow… You still checked it like it mattered. I mean, like it really mattered. So what’s going on? And more importantly – how do you stop your phone from running your day?
First, Let’s Be Clear: It’s Not Just You
It’s not you, there’s no personality error or mental shortcoming. You see, notifications are throughly designed to feel urgent. Not just important, mind you, but Urgent!
There’s a difference. Urgent says: “You really should look at this right now.” By contrast Important says: “This actually matters.” Most notifications are the first one pretending to be the second. They are usually not important, just really needy.
The Problem: Everything Wants Your Attention
Your phone is a multitasking marvel loaded with independent apps doing different things. Your phone can be doing:
- Messages
- Apps
- Social media
- Shopping
- Reminders
- Updates
And all of them are competing for exactly one thing:
You
So they use anything and everything at their disposal to get your attention. They will use:
- Sounds
- Vibrations
- Red badges
- Pop-ups
Basically, every trick available to just simply say:
“Hey… HEY… look at me.“
Why You Check Even When You Know It’s Probably Nothing
Because your brain is doing what it was trained to do, it is thinking:
“What if this one is important?”
Even if 99% of the time it isn’t at all. But just that tiny 1% bit of uncertainty is enough to pull you in, hook, line, and scrolling finger.
The Goal Isn’t “No Notifications”
Notifications are not neccesarily bad. They even have their uses. And you don’t need to live in total silence. You just need to stop treating everything like it deserves your attention.
Because it doesn’t. Let’s look at the steps needed to region control of your notifications.
Step 1: Turn Off the Noise
Start here – it’s the biggest win. Go into your notification settings for each app and ask:
“Does this app actually need to interrupt me?”
If the answer is no… Turn it off. This will probably be especially true for:
- Shopping apps
- Social media
- Games
- Anything that says “you might like this”
Your phone should not be suggesting things to you all day, and it definitely should not be a marketing tool with you at its disposal.
Step 2: Keep Notifications for People (Not Apps)
There’s a simple but handy rule to follow when it comes to most notifications. Set your notifications to:
People = yes
Apps = mostly no
So keep the notifications for things that actually involve people. These include:
- Calls
- Messages
- Things that actually involve other humans
Everything else that’s screaming for attention? Optional at best. Don’t be afraid to be judge, jury, and executioner when it comes to controlling your notifications. Your focus is more important than that.
Step 3: Check on Your Schedule, Not Theirs
Control the moment. Instead of reacting every time your phone buzzes, flip the script. You will decide when to check. For example, you can check on a schedule that best fits your routine. Some basic times are:
- Morning
- Midday
- Evening
That way, you’re not constantly being pulled away. Instead you’re choosing when to engage. At a time of your own choosing when you’re probably better equipped to make a decision on how to act.
Step 4: Make It Easier to Ignore
You don’t have to turn them all off. Even if you keep some notifications, you can still make them less disruptive:
- Use silent mode
- Turn off vibration
- Disable lock screen previews
Remember, out of sight (and out of sound) = way easier to ignore.
Step 5: Pause Before You Check
Do this. Next time your phone buzzes, don’t grab it right away. Wait a few seconds and just breathe. Then ask yourself: Do I actually need to check this right now? You’ll be surprised how often the answer is:
“No… not really.”
Step 6: Accept That You Might Miss… Nothing
Brace yourself, here’s the truth: Most notifications are not urgent. They’re not even important. And most can just wait.
So if you don’t check immediately, what happens? Usually… Nothing.

The Power Of Silence
Notifications can be powerful because:
- They create urgency
- They interrupt your focus
- They make everything feel important
But once you take control of them, something interesting happens:
Your phone gets quieter… and your brain does too.
(And if your phone just buzzed while reading this… you know what to do… Nothing!)
