Part of the NerdBeach Companion Series “How to Take Back Control of Your Attention”

You’ve probably been there. You open your phone for a little scrolling. For just a quick minute, nothing seriously excessive. Just a little break. Next thing you know… You’ve been scrolling long enough to:
- Forget why you picked up your phone
- Learn three useless facts
- And somehow end up emotionally invested in a stranger’s dog
And now you’re thinking:
“Okay… I should probably stop.”
But you don’t. Not yet. Because stopping somehow feels weirdly harder than continuing.
So how do you actually stop scrolling… without relying on some heroic levels of self-control?
First Problem: There’s No “End”
the problem is that scrolling doesn’t come with a stopping point. There’s no:
- “You’re done now”
- “That’s the last post”
- “Great job, you’ve completed the internet”
It just keeps going. So your brain keeps thinking that it will stop after the next one. And then it’s just after that next one. And then it’s:
“Alright, but this one looks interesting…”
Second Problem: You’re Already in Motion
Too many times it’s a problem already in motion, making it harder to stop. After all, once you start scrolling, you’ve already:
- Opened the app
- Started the loop
- Gotten a small reward
Now your brain is in “keep going” mode. Stopping means breaking momentum. And your brain doesn’t love that.
Third Problem: Willpower Shows Up Too Late
Sadly, by the time you think you should stop, you are already deep into it. And willpower at that point, with all that momentum, is kinda like tying to stop a runaway cart with your big toe.
Sure, it’s possible. But it’s not going to be easy. And it might just hurt a little.
The Solution: Don’t Rely on Willpower
Instead, of relying on some heroic act of sheer willpower, change the situation before you get stuck in it. Do the following:
Step 1: Decide Before You Start
This is the most important step. Before you even open the app, tell yourself:
“I’m going to scroll for 10 minutes.”
Instead of just leaving it to chance. We both know that never ends well.
Step 2: Use a Timer (Yes, Really)
Set a timer. Seriously, set one. Because as it turns out, your brain is terrible at tracking time while scrolling. But a timer:
- Keeps you aware
- Creates a stopping point
- Gives you an external cue to stop
Without it, you’re just guessing. And guessing always turns into:
“Wait… how long have I been here?”
Step 3: Create an Artificial Ending
Since scrolling itself has no natural end (it just keeps scrolling!), you have to make one. Try simple rules like:
- “After 10 posts, I’m done”
- “After 3 videos, I stop”
- “After this timer, I close the app”
Sure, it sounds simple. That’s because it is. And yes, it actually works.
Step 4: Close the App Mid-Scroll (On Purpose)
Warning, this may feel weird. But like a tingle, that’s how you know it’s working. Instead of waiting for a “good stopping point” (which never comes), just:
Close the app… right in the middle of scrolling!
No warning. No big ceremony. At first your brain, wanting that next dopamine hit, will protest a little. But no worries, it gets easier fast. Just do it and take control of your time and your tired finger.
Step 5: Notice When It Stops Being Fun
It’s time to be honest with yourself. Scrolling usually feels good at first. There’s so much to explore and see. Then it becomes:
- Repetitive
- Mindless
- Slightly boring
That’s your cue. When it shifts from being interesting to:
“I’m just here”
It’s time to stop.
Step 6: Replace the Exit
We know that stopping scrolling can feel empty to a hungry brain. So go ahead and give yourself something else to do right after:
- Stand up
- Grab a drink
- Walk around
- Do literally anything that isn’t scrolling
Don’t worry, you’re not replacing it with productivity. Just something… different.
Add A Stop Before you Start
It’s not you, it’s designed that way. Scrolling is hard to stop because:
- There’s no ending
- You’re already in motion
- Your brain wants one more reward
So instead of trying to fight it in the moment…
Set yourself up to stop before you even start.
(And if you’re reading this while scrolling… this might be your stopping point.)
