Montauk Monster Washes up on New York Beach

July 30, 2008. The Montauk Monster, or the Monster of Montauk as it is being called by the interweb, washed up on a beach in New York today.  The guesses as to what it is are running wild today, and we have anything from a turtle out of its shell (but why does it have the rear legs with haunches then?) to a dog (the beak is the skull that rubbed through the skin) to a less fortunate space alien.

At this point you guess is good as mine, but hopefully more news will be forthcoming.  One thing is certain – it is not a weather balloon.  One popular theory is that it is the spearhead for viral marketing effort, but that seems too cruel to make it newsworthy.

Of course, the mention of "a government animal testing facility very close by in Long Island" has got the conspiracy folks abuzz, which is always entertaining. Of course, the word Montauk has a history of the extra-ordinary, which certainly adds to the story.

Update: New pictures have turned up of the creature.
