When Preeti Desai recently went for a walk on a Texas City beach after the events of Hurricane Harvey, the last thing she expected to find was a sea monster. But that was exactly what she discovered, and it is a creature of nightmares.
Photo by Preeti DesaiThe September 6 discovery prompted her to reach out for help in identifying the mysterious fanged beast. While at first no one could identify the creature, there was a response that may have solved the mystery. According to Adam Summers, a professor at the University of Washington and the School of Aquatic and Fisheries Sciences, it could be identified due to
“…remnant of skin coloration, the body and head shape, the teeth and the shape of the jaw they are in.”
So, what exactly is the teeth-laden creature? Well, if the scientists are correct, it is probably a fangtooth snake-eel, also known as aplatophis chauliodus. They are usually found in the western Atlantic Ocean between 30 and 90 metres deep.
While this mystery may be solved for now, it goes to show that there are still things in the depths of our own oceans that are alien to normal life. But then again, maybe mankind is the alien here to the proverbial fish out of the water. No matter how creepy it may appear to us…
