Greg Chaffins Today when you think of a tablet, chances are you’ll think of an iPad, an Android tablet, or even possibly a device running Windows. But there are other alternatives, and Brax Technologies PBC just might be one of the strongest to consider, especially if you are concerned about privacy and flexibility. Their new tablet is called open_slate, and it looks like it lives up to its name.
The open_slate allows you to choose the running OS at startup, and by default you can choose its own BraxOS or AOSP (Android.) But that’s not all, you can easily run Ubuntu, Ubuntu Touch, and Yocto Linux on the tablet, allowing you to pick the OS and apps that you trust the most.
On the privacy front, open_slate employs physical kill switches on the peripherals. So you can actually kill the power to such things as cameras, microphones, Bluetooth, Wifi, and GPS, ensuring that they stay off despite any software glitches or overrides. Battery life is also addressed, with a fully replaceable battery that disengages with a simple push of a button.
One thing that I find convenient is an available M.2 expansions slot. This lets you add up to 1TB of additional storage using an off the shelf M.2 SSD. Just buy it and plug it in, no hardware changes or tools required. The open_slate is truly a tablet that you can configure and expand as you need.
