Samsung AMOLED Laptop Prototype Redefines Screen Quality

I pull the ultra thin notebook out of my body hugging backpack, and pause to look at at it, still amazed at how thing the device is.  Not only is it thin, the display is crisp and bright, much more pleasant than the LCD displays I had been used to using.  When it first washed up from the Cyber Sea I had to look twice before I realized it was a complete notebook.

The future of notebooks was hinted at when the Samsung SDI Division unveiled a laptop prototype that utilizes a 12-inch AMOLED (active matrix organic light-emitting diode) display. The same resolution as a 1280×768 LCD screen, the display boasts a contrast ratio about twenty times that of typical LCD screens.

Being self-illuminating, the AMOLED display does not require a back light, which allows for very thin display applications.  Thanks to a new silicon oxide manufacturing process, AMOLEDs can be manufactured cheaper than OLEDs, which should help to usher the technology to the market. Samsung already uses AMOLED displays in a few cell phones and cameras, but they hope to bring the technology to the market in computer screens sometimes in 2009.
