Sony OLED Displays have Shorter Half Life than Reported, Still Nice

Sony's picturesque thin OLED displays have a secret.  They apparently do not have 30,000 hours of life before their displays are only half a bright as they were crisp out of the box.  Instead some researchers have found that the displays hit their functional half life at about 17,000 hours. Doing a little math on the basis of 8 hours a day use (17000 total hours/8 hours/day)/365 days/year, we find that in about six years (well, 5.8) that slick, still very nice looking $2500 Sony OLED display is only half the display it used to be. Despite this finding, all in all I am still impressed with these displays in both form and function, if not price.
