Batman’s Foes

Batman faces a variety of foes ranging from common criminals to outlandish supervillains. The list is one of the most recognizable in popular culture, many of them mirror aspects of the Batman’s character and development, often having tragic origin stories that lead them to a life of crime. Batman’s “most implacable foe” is the Joker, a psychopathic, clown-like criminal who, as a “personification of the irrational”, represents “everything Batman [opposes].” Other long time recurring antagonists include Catwoman, the Scarecrow, the Penguin, Two-Face, the Riddler, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, and Ra’s al Ghul, among many others.

The Dark Knight Manual

20120718-081157.jpgThe latest incarnation of Batman is now in the final part of its trilogy, and in my opinion it has never been done better. Film maker Christopher Nolan has managed to capture the darker aspects of Batman, and makes the character live up to the title of “Dark Knight”.

But so many times it isn’t Batman stealing the scene, but rather his wonderful gadgets. From the amazing Batmobile to the many items in the utility belt, the gadgets are what separate Batman from the typical comic book hero.

That is why I just had to share about the new book, The Dark Knight Manual: Tools, Weapons, Vehicles and Documents from the Batcave. Finally, Batman’s gadgets are getting the attention they deserve. According to the book’s description,

Following the destruction of Wayne Manor, Bruce Wayne began to assemble key sketches, diagrams, observations, and other top-secret documents germane to becoming Batman; he then entrusted this manual to his faithful butler, Alfred. Every defining moment is detailed here, charting Wayne’s collaborations with Lucius Fox at Wayne Enterprises on the latest cutting-edge technology.

This should be a fun read for any gadget lover, which I happen to be… You can find the book on Amazon and other retailers, and the going street price for the hardcover is around $25 if you shop around.
