Impress enclosure gives DIY SSD drive capability using SDHC cards

Have several large capacity SDHC cards on hand and really want a SSD in your computer?  The Impress PhotoFast SSD enclosure allows you to insert up to six SDHC cards and mount them as a single 2.5 inch SATA SSD.  The speed will depend on the type of SDHC cards used, but some tests have managed to get 111.4 BM/s read and 55.2 MS/s write.

So, let's see – if I had six 8GB SDHC cards on hand and the adapter, I could economically shove a 48GB SSD into that netbook.  Cool.  More information can be found at the translated Impress website.

Aiptek offering $250 1080p digital camcorder

Low cost  digital camcorder maker Aiptek has thrown down the gauntlet when it comes to 1080p HD recording.  The AHD300 digital camcorder can record 1080p at 30 fps, and for higher speed recording it can record 720p at an impressive 60 frames per second.  The camera stores the media on a SDHC card, and a 4GB card will give you about an hour of 1080p recording time.  If that was not enough, the  AHD300 can also grab 8 megapixel stills and doubles as a media player.

The good news is that the Aiptek AHD300 only costs $250.  For that price we can  forgive the lack of an optical zoom.

Sanyo Announes New DMX-HD800 Xacti Digital Camcorder

Sanyo has created a successor to its excellent HD700 Xacti digital camcorder with its new DMD-HD800 Xacti unit, and it has held up the name.  The new camera sports an impressive 8 megapixel CMOS sensor, and it can shoot 720p video at a smooth 30 fps, saving to a MPEG4 file format.

The HD800 camera also incorporates "Three Dimensional Noise Reduction" for improved image sharpness as well as having the ability to track 12 faces in a scene for optimum settings.  Other features include a 5X optical zoom (optical is the only real zoom), and it has great light sensitivity that allows it to record down to 3 lux.

The HD800 records on SDHC cards, comes in a range of colors, and is set to release in Japan for around $460.  It should be releasing into the rest of the world shortly thereafter.

Pentax to Offer 10.1 Megapixel E60 Camera for under $140

Megapixels in digital cameras just keep growing, and Pentax has upped the ante once again.  Their latest low cost offering, the E60 (and the bigger brother M60) sports a nice 10.1 megapixel image at an even nicer under $140 price tag.

The M60 will be released in Japan August 22 with the E60 being slated to release in the USA in October.  Features of the cameras include:

  • 10.1 megapixel sensor (M60 – 10.0)
  • 1/2.3" CCD
  • 3X optical zoom (M60 – 5x)
  • 10 person Face Recognition  (M60 – 32 person)
  • 2.4" LCD screen (M60  – 2.5")
  • SD and SDHC support
  • 6,400 ISO sensitivity
  • 6.3MB Internal Memory (M60 – 36.5MB)
  • USB port

It is still unclear as to whether the M60 will remain as Japan only or if it will join the E60 and be released in the USA as well.  It also suggests that, just as 3 megapixels did a few years back, 10 megapixels are destined to be the next basic digital camera resolution.  Which means that those 1GB cards you have been holding on to may have just become obsolete for any serious picture taking sessions.
