Nexsan SASBEAST is an Aptly Named Storage System

When it comes to storage, they are very many options out there for one to choose from. But I think I have found my favorite, and it has a great name to drop when talking tech with all of your friends.

The SASBeast, from data storage systems expert Nexsan, offers a storage density of 25.2TB in a 4U configuration. This means that you can hang hundreds of terabytes of storage in a single rack. Plus, you can mix drive types within the unit, using SAS, SSD, and SATA as needed for your specific application.

Now this would be perfect for my personal high-definition Star Trek library, as well as those home movies that always seem to be needing space. And with an add on chassis that allows up to 102 disks, I know that I will have storage for the future.

While the SASBeast might be a bit much for the average home user, businesses will no doubt find that it offers peace of mind with its single or redundant controllers. And when it comes to the question of local or remote (even cloud) storage, I will give you this peace of advice – use both. Even the best data warehouse in the country can be described as this – a single point of failure, especially when it comes to natural disasters.

Terebyte

The terabyte is a multiple of the unit byte for digital information. The prefix tera means 1012 in the International System of Units (SI), and therefore 1 terabyte is 1000000000000bytes, or 1 trillion (short scale) bytes, or 1000 gigabytes. 1 terabyte in binary prefixes is 0.9095 tebibytes, or 931.32 gibibytes. The unit symbol for the terabyte is TB or TByte, but not Tb (lower case b) which refers to terabit.

Dell Releases Inspiron Mini 9 netbook, offers $100 deal

The Dell Inspiron Mini 9 is officially available today, or at least the $399 Windows XP version is.  The newest netbook class machine sports an Intel Atom Diamondville processor, 1024 x 600 LED backlit screen, SSD, and a three hour battery life.  The $349 Ubuntu flavor, along with the other colors, will not be available for a few weeks.

The price is pretty good, but my biggest concern is the battery life.  Hopefully there will be an optional extended battery pack in the near future (for comparison, the Asus 901 gets 5 hours in real world use out of a rated 7 per charge, so you could probably expect 2.5 hours max on this one).  Otherwise it looks to be a nice netbook.

But if you want one, and you need to buy another machine as well, Dell has a sweet deal for you. If you purchase a Studio 15, XPS M1530 or XPS M1330 machine from Dell, you can buy an Inspiron Mini 9 for a suitable mini price of $99.  This deal is only valid until 6AM September 9th, so don't delay if you are in the market for both.

Ruggedized Elitebook 2730p Tablet Computer

HP's new business lineup of computers includes a ruggedized Elitebook 2730p tablet computer.  And by ruggedized we mean that it meets the MIL-STD 801F spec for dust, altitude, and high temperature specs (and since it is claiming the spec we assume it meets them for vibration and fall as well, but we could not find that verified).

The tablet features an Intel Core 2 Duo ULV, SSD option, biz card reader, DriveGuard, jog dial, and optional Outdoor View screen.  You can get the tablet with Vista or XP custom installed (interesting).  The screen is 12.1 inches with of course a digitizer running a resolution of 1280 x 600.  Dimensions are (h × w × d) 1.11 in (at front) x 11.24 in x 8.35 in / 28.2 mm (at front) x 290.0 mm x 212.0 mm. The tablet weighs in starting at: 3.74 lb / 1.70 kg (weight will vary by configuration).

Being part of the HP business lineup the HP business suite of software is installed, including

  • Manageability Intel® Centrino® 2 with vPro technology capable
  • HP Recovery Manager (Windows Vista only)
  • HP Client Manager Software
  • HP Client Configuration Management Agent Security Standard: HP ProtectTools
  • TPM Embedded Security Chip 1.2
  • Enhanced Pre-Boot Security
  • HP Spare Key
  • HP Disk Sanitizer
  • Enhanced Drive Lock
  • HP Fingerprint Sensor
  • Drive Encryption for HP ProtectTools
  • Credential Manager for HP ProtectTools
  • File Sanitizer for HP ProtectTools

The tablet comes with a Power 6-cell (44 WHr) battery, but there is an optional HP 2700 Ultra-Slim Battery.  Warranty is a Limited 3-year,1-year or 90-day, depending on country, but there is a 1-year limited warranty on the primary battery

The  Elitebook 2730p tablet computer is a nice looking computer, but it does seem that HP has given up permanently on producing a slate style machine for its business class.  And this machine, starting at almost 4 pounds, is probably a bit too heavy to be used as a convenient tablet, at least as a lot of users of slate computers have come to expect them.  Still, as a convertible tablet the specs are encouraging, but if I was looking for a real tablet from HP I would probably go back a few years and pick the HP TC1100. In my humble opinion the tablets from HP have not improved since then.

Impress enclosure gives DIY SSD drive capability using SDHC cards

Have several large capacity SDHC cards on hand and really want a SSD in your computer?  The Impress PhotoFast SSD enclosure allows you to insert up to six SDHC cards and mount them as a single 2.5 inch SATA SSD.  The speed will depend on the type of SDHC cards used, but some tests have managed to get 111.4 BM/s read and 55.2 MS/s write.

So, let's see – if I had six 8GB SDHC cards on hand and the adapter, I could economically shove a 48GB SSD into that netbook.  Cool.  More information can be found at the translated Impress website.
