The Cloud is an Interactive Light Fiber Sculpture

TheCloud_062308

The Cloud, created by MIT’s Mobile Experience Lab and located in Florence, Italy, is an organic interactive sculpture that utilizes hundreds of sensors, 65km of fiber optic cable and 15,000 individually addressable fibers to create a truly interactive experience.  The sculpture, which as designed works with the landscape, can sense touches, presence, and even environmental changes, and responds with seemingly contextual awareness.

The organic responsive landmark is capable of detecting presence and engaging with users through its multi-fiber touch interface. Tactile engagement with the individual fibers provokes a variety of responses from the cloud, ranging from ambient lighting to animation and sound.

An interesting aspect of The Cloud is that its responses and interactions are based on an open source platform, allowing anyone to add to its library.
