VW Releasing a Plug-In Hybrid Golf in 2010

The plug-in hybrid seems like a great ideal – you plug it in and recharge it for local uses, or you switch to hybrid mode for extended trips.  It simply fits the typical driver.  Volkswagen realizes that this makes sense, and they are bringing out a “Twin Drive” Golf around 2010.

The Golf will feature a 122 hp diesel engine along with a 82hp electric motor.  The vehicle should be able to go about 31 miles in all electric mode, thanks to the Sanyo developed lithium-ion batteries and a regenerative braking design.

The project will cost VW about $769 million, and the German government is kicking in $23.5 million through an alternative energy program.  No word yet on the expected vehicle price.

I look forward to seeing more plug in hybrids on the market, and perhaps even a few dedicated all electrics.  One thing is certain, by the year 2011 the automotive landscape for buyers will be different from today, and that is only a couple years down the road.
