Part of the NerdBeach Series “Artificial Intelligence Explained: What It Is, How It Works, and Where It’s Going”

When people other than AI Experts talk about AI risks, things tend to go in one of two directions: It’s either going to take over the world, or there’s nothing to worry about. As it turns out, neither one of those is actually correct. Because the people who actually work in the AI industry – the researchers, engineers, and experts – are worried about something much more specific.
What concerns the AI experts? Let’s take a look.
It’s Not About Evil Robots
First things first, the AI Experts are not sitting around, concerned that killer robots are going to suddenly become sentient and take over the world as we know it. That’s not a concern, AI doesn’t work that way. But I do wonder why the movies always paint living AI as something evil.
No, their concerns are rooted more in the subtle and practical.
First And The Biggest Concern: The Alignment Problem
If we could do a quick, unofficial poll between the leading AI experts, the odds are their leading concern would come down to one common issue – Alignment. At the risk of over simplification, this condition leads us to one question:
How do we make sure AI systems do what we actually want them to do?
Why This Is Harder Than It Sounds
The problem is that AI doesn’t naturally understand a lot of what makes us human. That his, it has no conceptual understanding of:
- Human values
- Context
- Intentions
- Trade-offs
It simply follows the instructions we give it, to the letter. That’s how it is designed to work through its neural network. But if those instructions are incomplete or misleading, or even poorly defined, AI can still execute them and do perfect job of following those instructions.
But the outcome might not be what was expected. In fact, the new outcome might be disruptive (or even harmful) on a fairly large level. Which is why AI Experts are concerned.

A Simple Example
Lt’s look at a simple example of an alignment issue. Suppose we tell our handy AI to “Maximize efficiency.” At first that makes sense, we do want the best bang for the buck one our efforts and resources. But what does that really mean, especially to a pattern matching prediction machine (which is how today’s AI actually works.) The AI could assume several different meanings, including:
- Faster processes?
- Fewer people?
- Less cost at any expense?
Without setting clear boundaries in the instruction set, “efficient” could lead to outcomes humans wouldn’t choose. That’s basically the alignment problem – AI’s intention may not be in alignment with the human one. And that could be ugly.
Second Concern: AI That Sounds Right (But Isn’t)
It’s not just alignment that keeps some AI Experts up at night. The next big issue is that AI is kinda dumb in its number crunching, hard driven efforts. That is, AI simply doesn’t know what it doesn’t know. If it goes through all of its pattern matching magical goodness and gets an answer, it could be completely wrong. But AI doesn’t know this, and stays confident in its answers.
Very confident, in fact. And it happens. When it does, they even have a term in use for it – “Hallucination.” The AI is literally seeing something that isn’t there, so the name actually fits. Not calling it a liar, of course, but AI did in fact make something up when this happens. And it believes it’s real.
Why This Matters
Because of the sure-fire, devout faith it has in its answers (whether it’s actually correct or not, ) People tend to believe. Humans are suckers for an answer given in complete confidence. But just imagine if AI hallucinated when giving information:
- In healthcare
- In finance
- In decision-making
Suddenly it’s not just inconvenient – that kind of error can be serious.
Third Concern: Misuse by Humans
AI is a very powerful tool, with mountain of data and connections at its disposal. If humans were to try to use the power of AI for more nefarious purposes, it could quickly escalate. In the wrong hands – as they like to say on TV – it could be used for:
- Misinformation at scale
- Deepfakes and manipulation
- Cyberattacks
- Automated scams
In other words, AI can amplify human intentions – good or bad.
Fourth Concern: Speed of Development
In case you haven’t noticed, AI is improving at a break neck speed. While that’s awesome from the technological side of things, it presents challenges to the rest of the world. Society doesn’t always adapt at the same speed as technology. And this can cause… friction.
What That Leads To
- Regulations lag behind
- People don’t fully understand the tools
- Systems get deployed before they’re fully tested
This isn’t new.
But with AI, the pace is faster than usual.
Fifth Concern: Over-reliance on AI
Experts are also concerned about something more subtle: People depending on AI too much
Why That’s a Problem
If people:
- Stop thinking critically
- Stop verifying information
- Rely on AI for important decisions
Then small errors can turn into big problems. AI is powerful. But it’s still a tool – not a replacement for judgment.
Sixth Concern: Loss of Human Oversight
As AI systems become more complex, they can become harder to fully understand. Even for the people who build them. That raises an important question:
Can we always explain why AI made a decision?
If the answer is no… That creates challenges for:
- Trust
- Accountability
- Safety
Seventh Concern: Concentration of Power
It’s not cheap – AI development requires:
- Data
- Computing power
- Resources
Because it has a large resource requirement – which means it takes a lot of money – AI will probably be controlled by Large companies and Governments. Experts worry this could lead to uneven access and power imbalances. Along with this is the inevitable less transparency of operations.
Because the more powerful the technology… The more it matters who controls it.
So… Should You Be Worried?
Here’s the balanced answer: You should be aware – not alarmed. The risks are real. But they’re also being studied and taken serious by leading AI experts, and some of these concerns are being addressed. Of course it’s that cut and dry, and no one can see down the road perfectly.
It’s not an uncontrolled situation, but it is an evolving one.
What This Means for You
You don’t need to fear or avoid AI (it’s already in your everyday life. ) And as you inevitably use it today you don’t even bother to think about it – which is how it does work best. But you should still stay informed as things develop, and even consider learning how it works.
Once you invest a little time in understanding AI, it’s easy to understand its strength and weaknesses. This could be important, since knowing the limits is what keeps you in control
Tools Used Wisely
AI experts aren’t worried about world-domination science fiction scenarios. Instead they’re focused on:
- Alignment
- Accuracy
- Misuse
- Oversight
- Responsible development
In other words, they are trying to make sure these powerful tools are used correctly.
The Risk Isn’t AI Alone – It’s How We Use It
AI is one of the most powerful technologies we’ve created, and it could open the door to even more powerful technologies. But like any powerful tool, the outcome depends on:
- How it’s built
- How it’s used
- Who’s guiding it
So the real concern isn’t:
“Will AI go wrong?”
It’s:
“Will we use it wisely?”
