When most people think about planets in our solar system, Mercury doesn’t get much attention.
Mars gets all the hype because people want to live there someday. Saturn has the cool rings. Jupiter is enormous and dramatic. Earth, naturally, gets a lot of press because we live here.
Mercury? Mercury is usually just that tiny little planet nearest the Sun that everyone remembers from grade school and then promptly forgets about forever. Which is unfortunate, because Mercury is absolutely bizarre.
For a planet that looks pretty plain from a distance, Mercury is secretly one of the strangest worlds in the solar system—a scorched, crater-covered metal ball with temperatures that swing wildly, an orbit that makes no sense, and enough odd quirks to make astronomers collectively go,
“What exactly happened to you?”
So let’s take a closer look at why Mercury is so weird, and why the smallest planet in the solar system might also be one of the most fascinating.
It’s Tiny… Like Weirdly Tiny
- Size of Mercury: Mercury is the smallest planet in the solar system, only about 3,030 miles wide.
- Comparison with Other Celestial Bodies: Mercury is smaller than Earth’s Moon and significantly smaller than Earth and Jupiter.
- Density of Mercury: Despite its small size, Mercury is surprisingly dense.
First off, Mercury is the smallest planet in the solar system. It’s only about:
- 3,030 miles wide
For comparison:
- Earth is nearly 8,000 miles wide
- Jupiter is a completely unfair 86,000+ miles wide
Mercury is barely bigger than Earth’s Moon. In fact, if Mercury were any smaller, it might not even qualify as a full planet and would probably get demoted to “space pebble with ambition.”
Despite being tiny, though, Mercury is surprisingly dense—which brings us to its next weird trait.
Mercury Is Basically One Giant Metal Ball
- Core Size: Mercury’s core is about 85% of its radius, much larger than Earth’s core.
- Composition: Mercury is mostly a large iron core with a thin crust.
- Possible Origin: A giant impact early in Mercury’s history may have blasted away much of its outer crust.
Mercury has an enormous iron core. In fact, scientists believe roughly:

That’s absurd. Earth has a large core too, but Mercury’s core is proportionally much bigger. Basically, Mercury is less “planet” and more: “Gigantic ball bearing with some rocks glued to the outside.”
Scientists aren’t entirely sure why Mercury has such a massive metal center, but one theory suggests it may have once been larger before a giant impact blasted much of its outer crust away. Meaning Mercury might have gotten punched so hard in its early life that most of it flew off.
Rough childhood.
It’s Super Hot… and Super Cold
- Daytime Temperature: Can reach 800°F (430°C), hot enough to melt lead.
- Nighttime Temperature: Can drop to -290°F (-180°C), colder than Antarctica.
- Reason for Extreme Temperature Fluctuations: Mercury has almost no atmosphere to trap heat, causing rapid heat loss at night.
Since Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun, you’d expect it to just be incredibly hot all the time. And sometimes it is. Mercury’s daytime temperatures can reach:
800°F (430°C)
That is hot enough to melt lead. But then Mercury does something weird: At night, temperatures can drop to:
-290°F (-180°C)
That’s colder than Antarctica could ever dream of being. So Mercury somehow manages to be:
- blazing hot enough to roast you alive during the day
- freezing cold enough to turn you into a space popsicle at night
It has the worst temperature mood swings in the solar system. Why? Because Mercury has almost no atmosphere. Without a thick atmosphere to trap heat:
- daytime heat escapes quickly
- nighttime warmth vanishes immediately
So Mercury has zero chill. Literally and figuratively.

A Day There Is Ridiculously Long
- Day Length: One full day on Mercury (sunrise to sunrise) lasts 176 Earth days.
- Year Length: One year on Mercury lasts 88 Earth days.
- Rotation and Orbit: Mercury spins very slowly while orbiting the Sun extremely quickly.
Mercury’s rotation and orbit are deeply weird. One full day on Mercury (sunrise to sunrise) lasts:
176 Earth days
Meanwhile, one year on Mercury only lasts:
88 Earth days
Yes, Mercury’s day is somehow longer than its year. That sounds fake, but it’s true. This happens because Mercury spins very slowly while orbiting the Sun extremely quickly. So if you lived on Mercury:
You would have two birthdays before finishing one full day.
Which would make calendars deeply annoying.
Its Orbit Is Strange and Messy
- Orbital Shape: Mercury has the most eccentric orbit of all the planets, meaning it follows a stretched-out oval path rather than a circle.
- Distance from the Sun: Mercury’s orbit causes it to vary in distance from the Sun, sometimes getting much closer and sometimes moving farther away.
- Impact on Temperature: The eccentric orbit contributes to Mercury’s extreme temperature swings.
Mercury has the most eccentric orbit of all the planets. That means instead of moving around the Sun in a nice neat circle, Mercury follows a stretched-out oval path. So throughout its year:
- sometimes it gets much closer to the Sun
- sometimes it moves farther away
This contributes to its already ridiculous temperature swings and makes Mercury’s orbit look like it’s struggling to follow instructions. It’s basically the planet equivalent of someone coloring outside the lines.
Mercury Has Almost No Atmosphere
- Atmosphere Composition: Trace amounts of oxygen, sodium, hydrogen, helium, and potassium.
- Atmosphere Characteristics: Extremely thin, called an exosphere, unable to retain heat, block meteors, or support weather.
- Atmosphere Functionality: Ineffective for most atmospheric processes.
Most planets have atmospheres. Mercury technically does too… but barely. Its atmosphere is so thin it’s called an exosphere, because it’s hardly an atmosphere at all. It contains trace amounts of:
- oxygen
- sodium
- hydrogen
- helium
- potassium
But it’s so weak that Mercury can’t:
- retain heat properly
- block meteors well
- support weather
- or do much of anything useful with it
Mercury’s atmosphere is basically: “Atmosphere Lite.”
It’s Covered in Craters
- Surface Appearance: Dusty, rocky, ancient, and heavily battered, resembling Earth’s Moon.
- Impact Craters: Covered in impact craters due to a lack of atmosphere and geological activity.
- Reason for Craters: Meteors don’t burn up in the atmosphere and craters aren’t erased over time.
Because Mercury has almost no atmosphere, meteors don’t burn up before impact. And because it has little geological activity, craters don’t get erased over time. The result?
Mercury is absolutely covered in impact craters. Its surface looks a lot like Earth’s Moon:
- dusty
- rocky
- ancient
- and heavily battered
Mercury basically looks like it’s spent billions of years getting punched in the face by space debris. Which, scientifically speaking, it has.
It Shrunk Over Time
- Planet Shrinkage: Mercury has shrunk over billions of years as its core cooled.
- Surface Features: The shrinking caused wrinkles and cracks, forming scarps.
- Cooling Effect: Mercury’s core cooling is likened to a raisin wrinkling as it dries.
Here’s one of Mercury’s strangest traits: Scientists believe Mercury has actually shrunk. As its giant metal core cooled over billions of years, the planet contracted.
That shrinking caused Mercury’s surface to wrinkle and crack, creating giant cliff-like ridges called scarps. Imagine a planet cooling down so much it literally wrinkles like a raisin. Mercury aged badly.
It Has Ice Somehow
- Mercury’s Surface Conditions: Blazing hot deserts and freezing dark craters.
- Polar Ice on Mercury: Water ice exists in permanently shadowed craters near Mercury’s poles.
- Reason for Polar Ice: Sunlight never reaches these craters, keeping them cold enough for ice to survive.
Now for the weirdest part of all: Mercury has ice. Yes. The scorching-hot closest planet to the Sun somehow has frozen water. How?
Some craters near Mercury’s poles are in permanent shadow, meaning sunlight never reaches them. These craters stay incredibly cold. Cold enough for water ice to survive. So Mercury contains:
- blazing inferno deserts
- freezing dark craters
- and hidden polar ice
This planet truly cannot pick a personality.
Mercury is Weird
- Physical Characteristics: Small, metal-heavy planet with extreme temperature variations, an oversized core, and a cratered surface.
- Atmospheric and Orbital Features: Almost no atmosphere, bizarre orbital timing, and hidden ice.
- Overall Description: A battered, chaotic, and unusual world in the solar system.
Mercury is weird because it’s a tiny metal-heavy planet with extreme temperature swings, an oversized core, bizarre orbital timing, almost no atmosphere, a crater-covered surface, hidden ice, and enough strange traits to make it one of the most unusual worlds in the solar system.
So while Mercury may not get the flashy attention of Saturn or Mars, it deserves more credit. Because the smallest planet in our solar system is basically:
a battered metal marble being roasted, frozen, and smacked by asteroids while orbiting the Sun in deeply chaotic fashion.
And somehow that’s just normal planetary behavior. Nature remains wonderfully ridiculous.
