Part of the NerdBeach series: “Why Technology Is So Hard to Ignore”

You go to check your social media status. Just for a minute, maybe two. You’re not planning a deep dive – just a quick scroll to see what’s going on in the world, your feed, or that one person you barely know but somehow keep up with.
Then you look up. And it’s been… whoa, way longer than it should have been. You’re not exactly sure how long. But long enough to make you feel slightly confused and mildly betrayed by time itself.
So what happened? Did time somehow speed up? Did you slow down? Or did your phone just quietly… bend reality a little? (Okay, maybe not at least until the next update, anyway. But something happened to that time.)
Your Brain Needs Markers to Track Time
Your brain is smart, but it has its needs too. Normally, your brain keeps track of time using markers:
- Starting something
- Finishing something
- Reaching a stopping point
That’s how you would normally know that it took about 20 minutes or so. But social media doesn’t have such markers. In fact, there’s no:
- Beginning
- Middle
- End
Instead it’s just one continuous stream of attention-grabbing content. So your brain has nothing to measure against
Everything Blends Together
There’s a lot to process when you check out your feed on social media. When you scroll, you’re seeing:
- Short videos
- Posts
- Comments
- Random bits of information
All back-to-back, with no clear transitions. or defined segments. It all blends into one long, continuous experience. Which makes your brain go:
“I have no idea how long we’ve been here.”
Without the markers your brain can’t accurately measure the difference in time. In fact, it’s really busy just processing all of the elements in your feed. Time measurement falters.
You’re Always Just Slightly Engaged
Social media is a relatively new experience for humans, Using it puts you in a very specific mental state:
- Not fully focused
- Not fully relaxed
- Constantly reacting
You’re busy:
- Watching
- Deciding
- Scrolling
- Repeating
This action keeps your brain just engaged enough to stay interested… but not engaged enough to track time properly.
Why Time Feels Faster While You Scroll
Our perception of time is not a constant on the best of days. And time feels faster when:
- You’re not bored
- You’re not deeply focused
- You’re constantly stimulated
Scrolling manages to hit all three of these at once. It’s the mental trifecta when it comes to “almost” using your brain. So instead of marking the time and noting its passage, your brain goes;
“Well, that barely registered.”
Even if, in fact, a lot of time actually passed.
The “Wait… What Time Is It?” Moment
Then it hits you. This is a common scenario. You check your phone for a minute…Then suddenly:
“Why is it dark outside?”
Or the classic:
“How is it already 10:30?”
Well, it’s not because time sped up. Rather it’s because your brain never tracked it in the first place.

No Natural Exit Points
Just like we talked about before, social media has no clear stopping points.
- No “end of episode”
- No “you’ve reached the bottom”
- No “good place to stop”
So you never get that signal to pause and check the time. You just keep going. And going…
Why It Feels Short While It’s Happening
Social media time can sneak upon you. After all, while you’re scrolling:
- You’re entertained
- You’re engaged
- You’re not thinking about time
So it feels like it’s quick. But afterward, your brain tries to reconstruct what happened… And it discovers that there’s no clear structure to measure. So it just goes:
“That felt short… I think?”
Even if it wasn’t. And that’s usually the case.
How to Stay Aware of Time Again
The good news is that there’s hope, and no, you don’t have to quit social media. Instead you just need to give your brain (and social media) some boundaries.
Try this:
- Set a timer before you start
(Let something else track time for you) - Check the clock intentionally
(Don’t rely on “feeling” how long it’s been) - Create your own stopping points
(“After 5 posts” or “after 10 minutes”) - Pause occasionally and ask: “How long have I been here?”
Your Brain Lost Track
It’s not magic. Social media messes with your sense of time because:
- There are no clear markers
- Everything blends together
- Your brain stays lightly engaged the whole time
So if you’ve ever thought:
“There’s no way I’ve been on here that long…”
The real answer is:
Your brain lost track… because nothing told it to keep track.
(And now might be a good time to check what time it actually is.)
