The Falter 2D Pen goes where not many pens have went before – in a flat place. The pen comes unassembled on a flat metal card, and to use it you punch it out and assemble the pen. Once assembled, its main feature (being a 2D pen) is pretty much lost.
But where does the pen appeal? I mean, if it was meant as some kind of bulk distribution, then I could see the flat packaging working. But at $39 a pop, any kind of bulk use is not practical. And with the tabs and lack of a solid 3D curve, calling it a fine pen once assembled is probably a misnomer at best.
Perhaps as a conversation piece or a gift to the pen lover who has everything, then it might be well received. It is interesting to look at, and it reminds me of some drafting tools I used before CAD was big. For that reason, it just might find its market. Classy doesn't always have the requirement of practicality.
