Cardboard Bike is Very Green and Cheap

CardboardBicycle_062108

The Cardboard Bike, created by Sheffield Hallam University student Phil Bridge, has got to be the most earth friendly bike ever developed.  The entire bike, with the exception of the tires and chain components, are made from industrial cardboard.

The biodegradable Cardboard bike is not only earth friendly, it is also pocketbook friendly – the designer figures that the bike could be created for roughly 15 pounds.  The ideal is that a bike so economically priced would also be less of a target for theft.

The eco-friendly bike is only a floor model at this time, but there are hopes of getting a manufacturer involved at some point. And if you were curious as to what effects rain would have on the bike, it apparently is able to survive an occasional wetting.

A video report of the green bike, including an interview with the designer, can be found at the BBC Online.  I do have to wonder, as the reporter mentions, as to how it would be shipped – in another cardboard box, or in its own parts?
