Chang Ting Jen has an entry in the International Bicycle Design Competition that fits in today’s renewable energy and green mindset. His bike design features a vehicle that can go from backpack to bicycle to handcart as needed.
The Bicycle Backpack, as he calls it, folds up into a backpack measuring just 60 cm in length and tip the scales at only 5.5 kg. Despite the size, the bike remains fully featured including a headlight, brake light, and turn signals.
While there have been other folding bicycle designs, the added benefit of being used as a handcart is an unexpected but welcome feature. The bike cannot be rode while acting as a cart, but it allows the moving of goods that would otherwise be impractical with other designs.
With today’s energy prices hitting all time highs, having a mode of transportation that literally you can carry on your back is not a bad ideal at all. If the design is built with the right materials, making the bike solid enough for the rider to be comfortable, then it could be a winner.
