Most of us like to think that the places we use our credit cards, debit cards, and personal information take great pains to safeguard that data. And while that is true in a lot of cases, nonetheless data breaches happen.
Unfortunately, when a breach does happen, all too often it affects a massive amount of consumers. The infographic below illustrates the latest data breaches, and sad to say each square below is a MILLION consumer records lost. It almost makes you nervous, doesn't it?

A data breach is the intentional or unintentional release of secure information to an untrusted environment. Other terms for this phenomenon include unintentional information disclosure, data leak and also data spill. Incidents range from concerted attack by black hats with the backing of organized crime or national governments to careless disposal of used computer equipment or data storage media.
