Seiko and Epson Reveal 3D Mobile Display Prototype

Seiko and Epson have a nice goody for near future cell phones – how does a 3D display sound? The joint effort uses a high resolution LCD display coupled with a lenticular lens setup.  The resulting display is 3 inches, perfect for mobile use.

Of course, to use the display a special camera must create a 3D capable image, and it can require up to 8 camera images from different angles. But the resulting image works very well with the setup.

The display shown is a prototype, but Seiko is planning on making the technology available to makers in a few years, so a 3D display may soon be as close as your pocket.

Solar Powered Tent Structure Could Aid In Remote Learning

Designed by CS Design Concepts to be a remote learning and reference station, the Tent hopes to help students in the field. The Tent can help with environmental engineering and archeology students with communicating with their of-site professors as well as getting important feedback.  The Tent concept is designed to work in adverse environments, where a standard computer setup may not work so well.

The Tent features flexible solar panels that apply a charge to the memory metal structure, making the tent erect.  The solar panels also power a flexible LCD screen, allowing communication to ideally anyone in the world.

When the Tent is deactivated, the memory metal collapses and the entire unit (including flexible solar cells and flexible LCD screen) can be shoved into a backpack for redeployment later.

I am sure how far the technology for the flexible LCD panel (and associated electronics) has come along to make the tent practical, but the 5 ft. flexible solar cells I have had the pleasure of using certainly is in place, and memory metal technology practically daily.  The ideal of a powered dynamic stucture is quite interesting.

Diesel Revives the LED Watch in a Stylish way

diesel_mirrored_led_watch_061208

While LED watches were in vogue back in the 70s, they soon gave way to the LCD watches, driven by lower power requirements. Yet LED watches did provide their own segment light source, no backlight required.

Now Diesel has a watch that makes LED watches fun again. The LEDS sit behind mirrored plastic, and when the display is off the screen is perfectly blank.  Not only that, but the display can be set to show a custom 20 character message.  More than enough characters to say, "Do you want to go to the disco?"

The watches cost $170, and can be found at Diesel Time Frames.
