Matsushita Panasonic Announces Nano Silicon Lighting

panasonic_Lighting_Device_070908

Matsushita Electric Works (soon to be Panasonic) has announced a new lighting device that could one day be as important as LED and OLED.  In experiments, the device produced50% more light than existing lights that consumed the same energy.

The technology behind the new light source comes from electron-discharging nano silicon.  This causes the Xenon gas to emit UV light, which in turn causes the phosphor to flouresce, creating visible light.  And this is done without the use of mercury, which is required in today's fluorescent lighting.

Matsushita will present more details to the general public in Poland this July 13th at the  21st International Vacuum Nanoelectronics Conference to be held in Poland from July 13.  Since it is a type of fluorescent lighting the new technology could easily fit into existing lighting models, making it a natural fit and possibly gain acceptance quickly.

Optoma Readies DLP Pocket Projector for 2009 Release

OptomaPocketProjector_062508

Pocket projectors are going to be a hot item in the near future, and now we have one more entry into the market.

Optoma is readying its pocket projector, based on the Texas Instrument DLP Pico chipset, for a 2009 release.

The projector is smaller than typical cell phones, yet it can project an image that is 100 times larger than a typical portable player.

The Optoma projector uses a LED light source so that a bulb will not be an issue. The video below shows the pico projector in action hooked up to an iPod, and it looks pretty sweet.

The product will be in limited release in Europe and Asia in late 2008, with a worldwide launch in 2009.

A.M.P.Bot Can Follow You While Playing Your Theme Music

ampbot

Ever see the episode of Family Guy where Peter had his own them music?  While that was a cartoon and easy to add a soundtrack, the A.M.P.Bot can help you do that in real life. The unit will follow you around, playing your favorite music. The robot even has hand controls in case the theme music needs a quick bump for the occasion.

The A.M.P.Bot (“Automated Music Personality”) is your own personal robotic buddy with a boom box.  The 29″ robot features a self-balancing gyroscopic system and a follow mode that will follow you and keep the speakers pointed at you at all times.

A.M.P.Bot incorporates obstacle avoidance systems to avoid steps and walls, and as it travels the musical bot will more or less dance to the beat, providing its own LED based light show. A 12 watt amp and three speakers push out the music, and A.M.P.Bot’s hands serve as mixers and special effects generators. The A.M.P.Bot  will be available in the States this October from Hasbro’s Tiger Electronics, with an expected retail price around $500.
